February 2026: carbon footprint mandatory for industrial batteries > 2 kWh

Under regulation (EU) 2023/1542, the carbon footprint declaration becomes mandatory for industrial batteries above 2 kWh from February 2026 — following electric-vehicle batteries, covered since February 2025. It’s the step that directly precedes the full battery passport in 2027.

The carbon footprint is a product attribute in its own right: verifiable, dated, traceable, attached to a specific reference. Its home is the product record, not an isolated spreadsheet drifting on the side. Manufacturers who model these environmental attributes now gain a head start on the passport obligation.
